Career mapping How to become an executive in the next 5 years Hult Blog
A question most business students and ambitious professionals reflect on is ââ¬Å"Where do I see myself in five years?â⬠In an age of entrepreneurship, you may be drawn to the idea of launching your own business. Or maybe you see yourself in the executive seat of an existing, successful corporation. But how do you get there? As many CEOs are likely to tell you, it isnââ¬â¢t often a straightforward climb. Career mapping involves setting goals and developing skills with a clear progression plan to get yourself where you want to be. And if your goal is to progress to a senior executive position, there are a number of practical steps that can accelerate your journey up the ladder. Corporate advisor, investor, and entrepreneur Kenneth ââ¬Å"Hapâ⬠Klopp always knew he wanted to run a business. During an interview for an entry-level role at Procter Gamble as a freshMBA grad, he was asked where he saw himself in five years. He responded that he expected to be the president of the company. Hap went on to serve as the President and CEO of The North Face for over 20 years. Today, weââ¬â¢re delighted to have him as a professor at Hult. In his recent webinar, Hap expands on the steps you need to take to get to where you want to be. He shares his own story as well as anecdotes of the successesââ¬âand failuresââ¬âof companies and CEOs around the world. In this post, we summarize Haps advice in 6 steps. If youd like to watch his webinar and learn more practical tips for mapping your own executive path, you can watch it here: Find the right entry-level role The majority of large company CEOs arenââ¬â¢t brought in as outsiders. Most work their way up internally. Positioning yourself in the right roleââ¬âand succession of rolesââ¬âwithin your company can set you on the right path to the executive suite. Future CEOs often map their career trajectory through substantial operational roles, sometimes running large or international divisions of the company before taking the top job. In some cases, a strong financial background can be an asset. Nearly half of Fortune 100 CEOs previously served as a divisional CFO. Former McKinsey consultants have the best odds of becoming CEOs. Alternatively, launching your career at a major consultancy can help you quickly develop the adaptability and practical breadth of experience thatââ¬â¢s highly desirable in an executive position. In fact, a USA Today study found that former McKinsey consultants have the best odds of becoming the CEO of a public company. Earn recognition (and reputation) for the right reasons Wherever you currently are on the corporate ladder, the best way to position yourself to take the next step up is to earn recognition internally for your initiative. Be the first to volunteer for new opportunities, such as leading task forces or serving on corporate committees. Doing this well can build your skills and credibility, earning you recognition beyond the job you do every day at your desk. A can-do attitude will help you to develop a network of advocates and influential references from within the business, keeping your name at the front of their minds when the next big opportunity arises. Taking on assignments that require travel or relocation can be particularly beneficial, not only as a demonstration of your commitment, but also as an opportunity to gain international or travel experienceââ¬âsomething expected of future CEOs. Taking on assignments that require travel or relocation can be beneficial to your career. Another way to get recognized is to identify an executive mentor and asking to shadow them. This can be an invaluable opportunity to get to know them personally, seek their advice, and experience the day-to-day life of a CEO. But to make sure itââ¬â¢s a beneficial experience for you both, itââ¬â¢s important to demonstrate the value you offer in return. Perhaps itââ¬â¢s consumer insight from a younger generation, or maybe itââ¬â¢s extra support on an important pitch. Develop the characteristics of a leader Successful business leaders need more than just business acumen. In todayââ¬â¢s business environment, youââ¬â¢ll need the people skillsââ¬âsoft skillsââ¬âto get the most out of the teams you aspire to lead. Itââ¬â¢s essential to be able to communicate your ideas clearly and persuasively, often in front of large and influential groups of people. Good leaders are good presenters. Embrace any opportunity you have to create and deliver presentations. The more you do, the easier it becomes. Good leaders are good presenters. Another key characteristic is emotional intelligence (also known as emotional quotient, or EQ). Emotionally intelligent people are self-aware and in control of their emotions, and theyââ¬â¢re also good listeners. Practice your active listening skills and also be sensitive to the non-verbal cues colleagues may be giving you. Of course, leadership isnââ¬â¢t just about talking. Good leaders walk the walk too, actively contributing to the success of the team. ââ¬Å"A leader is someone who says ââ¬ËI willââ¬â¢ and then does it. A leader is not someone who just talks about getting things doneââ¬âthey contribute all the time.â⬠-Hap Klopp, Hult professor and 20-year Founder/President/CEO ofThe North Face Cultivate your personal brand Think about what drives you personally and professionally. Maybe itââ¬â¢s a passion for new technology. Or maybe itââ¬â¢s a love for nature or an interest in sustainability. These are your personal brand values. And just like a companyââ¬â¢s brand, these are the values that differentiate you and drive your success. Surround yourself at work with like-minded ambitious colleagues who reflect your brand values. Youll develop more meaningful and motivating workplace connections. And youââ¬â¢ll benefit from a ââ¬Å"brand haloâ⬠effect that can improve your profile as a valuable team member with leadership potential. Your online presence is a public display of your personal brand. pub pub Outside of work, remember that your online presence is a public display of your personal brand. If a company is going to consider you for an executive role, theyll definitely look you up online. If youââ¬â¢re seeking a new role or positioning yourself for a promotion, do an online search for your name first. Make sure your public social profiles are consistent with your brand values. ââ¬Å"What is your DNA? When you wake up in the morning, what do you think about? What are you so uniquely good at that you can give 120% when nobody else can? That is what you should develop your personal brand around.â⬠Hap Klopp, Hult Professor and 20-year President and CEO of The North Face Form good relationships with executive recruitment firms Being recognized by the right recruitment firms can be an important way to position yourself beyond middle management. Top executive firms get access to some of the most desirable positions. Get to know an experienced executive ââ¬Å"headhunterâ⬠on a personal level. This can make it easier to secure an introduction to the board of a leading company. Strong candidates for senior executive roles will want to get themselves known by big firms such as Korn Ferry, Russell Reynolds, or Boyden. Think about your particular area of interest or expertise. Itââ¬â¢s also worthwhile seeking out specialist recruiters who may have executive roles tailored to your specific skills. Expand your knowledge with a business degree Gaining the right academic credentials can sometimes be the key to an executive-level role. In fact, over 40% of the CEOs of Fortune 100 companies have MBAs, and over half studied business, economics, or accounting as undergraduates. If your academic background isnââ¬â¢t within business, an MBA can help you to gain the broad, fundamental knowledge you need to stand out. If you already have several years of practical career experience, an Executive MBA can broaden your knowledge of the wider world of business, so you donââ¬â¢t become siloed in your particular discipline and stagnate, rather than moving up. Over 40% of the CEOs of Fortune 100 companies have MBAs. The world of business is becoming more globalized. Images of the Nude Male in European Art Essay - 706 Words
The human body, especially the nude male figure, has been a subject of art since the first scratching appeared on cave walls. Stick figures with phalluses denoted the male, procreation and dominance. Archeologists have found evidences proving that the male nude appeared in Egypt in the early Dynastic periods and in early Mesopotamia four thousand years ago. The Greek made the nude into art, and we, the Americans, made it into something commonly referred to as pornography. Until today, nude is still a major subject in art that everyone would have seen a few times, either in display cases of a museum or in greater numbers of male underwear ads. Unsurprisingly, his female counterpart was Venus. The statue was found in Rome during the 15th century, and you can see the pose is repeatedly used in painting and sculpture over centuries. Many fashion designers are favoring this pose, languid leaner, exists in classical art alongside more heroic models of male beauty (Bordo 406). Apollo stands there solidly, with left hand raising high; his body projects strength, solidity; hes no male waif (Bordo 392). He calmly looks straight at you as i f daring you to offend him. And of course, his penis is invisible, a symbol of malehood. Unlike the Romans, the Greek had no problem with getting naked. They did not cover their private parts with a leaf or clothes, they showed it all. One of the most famous statues of all time is the statue of David of Michelangelo. David stands 13 feet 5 inches high. The creation of the piece happened during the Renaissance, the rebirth of classical ideas. At that time, Florence needed a centerpiece to represent the city. The colossal piece of marble had been awaiting a sculptor who could do something with it for many years. Inside this piece of marble, Michelangelo saw young and powerful David. Poems Assignment William Wordsworth is a British Romanticist that is born in Cockermouth in the Lake District of England in 1770. In the year 1795 he moved with his sister Dorothy Wordsworth to Dorset in the Lake District near his friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge. These two people in the life of William Wordsworth have played an important role in his works, particularly in the ââ¬Å"Lucy Poemsâ⬠. Wordsworth wrote a series of poems that revolves around the existence of a certain ââ¬ËLucyââ¬â¢ which identity was never known or revealed by Wordsworth himself. A theory for ââ¬Å"She dwelt among the untrodden waysâ⬠is that it was written to ââ¬Å"represent an attempt to give literary expression and distance to Wordsworth s feeling of affection for his sister. Complete Persepolis/Season of Madness Free Essays
The Complete Persepolis/ A Season of Madness These two selections are based on completely different scenarios. One takes place in Iran during its countryââ¬â¢s revolution with Marjane, a girl trying to figure out who she is and wants while having to face her countries conflicts that affect her. The other story takes places inside a home were a woman named Fatin feigns madness and is having to do desperate things instead of admitting to an adulterous affair she had. We will write a custom essay sample on Complete Persepolis/Season of Madness or any similar topic only for you Order Now Although these two stories may seem like they have nothing in common, these two selections have certain particular points that can be compared among each other. The three points that can be compared are about the mother, husband, and protagonist positions. Marjiââ¬â¢s mother better known as Mrs. Satrapi or Taji s in The Complete Persepolis is a passionate woman, who is upset with the way things are going in Iran, including the elimination of personal freedoms, and violent attacks on innocent people. She actively takes part in her local government by attending many protests. Marjaneââ¬â¢s mother is very family oriented. She cares very dearly about her daughter Marjane, so much that she is willing to do anything for her happiness. She and Marjaneââ¬â¢s father were the ones who decided to send Marjane to Austria. The reason they did this was because they wanted Marjane to be safe and have a better life. The only way she could be safe is to get away from the war that was going on at the time. Majaneââ¬â¢s mother only wants her daughter to be happy. She goes far distances to do so, like going and visiting Marjane in Austria and helping Marjane with her and her husband Rezaââ¬â¢s wedding even though she did not agree with it and that shows again that she is willing to do anything for her daughter as long as sheââ¬â¢s happy. In A Season of Madness, the mother ââ¬âin ââ¬â law shows no compassion. The mother-in-law is a commonly disliked figure in Arab culture, especially when she is the matriarch of the larger family. It seems as if Fatin is being controlled be this older woman that shows to have no interest towards her. At the end of the story when Fatin confesses to her unfaithfulness the mother-in law reacts with a very unlikeable personality with an attitude of her just wanting Fatin out their lives. Then his mother was clasping my hand, twisting her mouth into a grimace of pity and murmuring, ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s crazy, poor thing. Nothing can be done for her. â⬠(745) Marjaneââ¬â¢s husband Reza served in the Iran army. Reza used to be a womanizer but when he met Marjane that all changed. He was into art just like Marjane, and took it very seriously. He shared love for life like Marjane and he also didnââ¬â¢t take the Iran government too seriously. Him and Marjane dated for a while and ended up getting married but they both changed which lead to fighting which ultimately lead to a divorce. Reza is important because he helped Marjane chase her dream of getting into the career path of art by applying to University of Tehran with her. So overall, Reza was a good husband to her that helped her along the way of finding herself. Fatinââ¬â¢s husband is very compassionate and loving and vows to stay with her no matter what. Poor thing, sheââ¬â¢s so young. I swear to god, Iââ¬â¢ll take her anywhere in the world to find a cure for herâ⬠(745) Fatinââ¬â¢s husband although at a point makes her seem as though she was invisible and almost as childlike only showing that his feelings are sufficient. It seems as if he was being selfish by ignoring all the things she did to get a divorce and still wanting her there with him no matter what. Influenced by her liberal parents, Marji is outspoken, aware of her environment and spends more time reading books than playing with toys. A believer in God and Marxism, and rebellious at times. Marji is a strong girl, who follows in her parents footsteps. Even though Marji ââ¬Ës view of the world changes as she grows, from a small little girl to a full grown woman, her feelings on life remain the same and has always been a fighter. She had many experiences throughout her life; she was the new kid at school, had to make new friends, got into the wrong crowd, smoked cigarettes, smoked weed, had boyfriends, and many other things. Marjane strongly believed in fighting for what you believe in. Sometimes her actions seemed rebellious, and they got her into trouble, but this didnââ¬â¢t change her feelings or ambitions. Fatinââ¬â¢s greatest desire is to discover her ââ¬Å"real selfâ⬠through creativity and independence, and to find her individual place in society. Fatin is suffering by being in a relationship with a man that she does not love. Fatinââ¬â¢s discovery of painting as an outlet is shown when she says ââ¬Å"I stumbled along in my madness, never meeting my real self except when my eyes fell on the watercolors, which the strange light in this African country had inspired me to paint: it was a light that broke the hold of the sunââ¬â¢s burning rays for a short time at daybreak and dusk. I often wondered if I should tear these paintings down from the walls, in case they were what made my husband keep hoping that the old Fatin would return. â⬠(Al-Shaykh 742) Fatin hides her pain and confusion through her paintings because she feels her marriage, children, house and sex is not fulfilling. She turns herself into a really disgusting human by doing things such as not brushing her mouth or not wearing protection during her period. She remains invisible, unrecognized, and a woman without a voice. The protagonists in these two stories seek freedom of expression and look for a voice in their own particular way. They refused to be helpless, unhappy, and an act of their own initiative to reject the role patriarchy has reserved for them. In 1794 The Temporary Capital Was In An Extreme St Essay Example For Students
In 1794 The Temporary Capital Was In An Extreme St Essay ate Of Political ExcIn 1794 the temporary capital was in an extreme state of political excitement. Federalist Thimas Fitzsimons, was challenged by Republican John Swanwick with vicious charges with the intent to attract voters. Fitzsimonss supporters called Swanwick an unstable person who was unknown by the political public until he got to know the enemies and made friends with them. John won a syunning victory over Fitzsimons, beating seven of the twelve votes and getting fifty-six percent of the votes. 1789 and 1801 were very crucial years for the young America. Franklin had said that Americans had proved that they were able to destroy governments. The candidates for this election were Thomas Fitzsimon, and John Swanwick. Fitzsimons was born in Ireland and later migrated to the colonies before the revolution. He first started low by working for a clerk, then later moved up and married into the principal merchants family. he was the original founders of the Bank of North America, and the president of the Insurance Company of North America. John was a Roman Catholic. He was a member of the Federalist inner circle in Philadelphia and a firm supporter of Alexander Hamilton. Swanwick was born in England. Him and his family arrived in the colonies in the early 1770s. John embraced the Patriot cause. Johnwas hired as a merchant in a firm where is fluency in French and German made him invaluable to the firm. He quickly rose to full partnership in 1783. then in 1794 he bought out his partner share in the company and became full owner. By 1793, he had fallen away from Federalism and had become a Democratic-Republican. The Federalists believed in preserving liberty. It was revealing the rulers who were chosen by the people and the government. Their views on the whisky rebellion were that they vowed not to pay taxes. The democratic-republican wanted war. They were letting the revenue officers arrange themselves immediately under the banner of treasury. The first account of yellow fever appeared toward the latter end of July, in a lodging house in North Water Street. During the month of august the funerals amounted to upwards of three hundred. The disease quickly spread through all sides, and in this month one thousand four hundred were added to this list of mortality. The disease was still progressing and towards the end ninety to one hundred were dyeing daily. The mortality total amounted to four thousand and forty one deaths. Benjamin Rush said to Mrs. Rush that she should be assured that that he would send for her if he would be stricken with the disease, and that he expected anyone else to send for him if they had been stricken down with the disease. The symptoms were followed by stupor, delirium, vomiting, dry skin, cool or cold hands and feet, a feeble slow pulse. The eyes would suffuse with blood, then afterwards become yellow, and then most common the yellow would then cover the whole body. The common remedies for colds had no effect what so ever of yellow fever. The yellow fever commitment was this that followed, Of the eighteen peoplecited for contributions to the Citizens Committee on the Fever, nice were definitely Democratic-Republicans. Of the remaining nice, only one was avowed Federalist. By 1800 most of the country had become involved in the gradual process of party building. By that time the Democratic-Republicans were the dominating political force, although Federalism still retained considerable strength in New England and the middle states. Swanwick had never seen the total triumph of the Democratic-Republicans because he had died in 1798 by yellow fever. Fitzsimons never again sought political office, he focused his energy on his already successful mercantile and banking career. Y 1826 many of the federalist problems had been resolved, but at that same time new issues had arisen that would test the durability of the republic. Andrew Jackson had threatened to break the Jeffersonian coalition, Westward expansion had carried Americans into territories owned by other nations, and Amercian cities such as Philadelphia were growing in both population and socioeconomic problems. .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff , .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff .postImageUrl , .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff , .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff:hover , .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff:visited , .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff:active { border:0!important; } .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff:active , .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uafdc86c64acfcaac8f0b7722b63b45ff:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The most dangerous game EssayWords/ Pages : 705 / 24
